China and Number Plates Using a 4 or 8
China has a long and interesting history, a nation famed for its (to Western Eyes) strange traditions and superstitions. Over recent years, China has become more and more like a Western country, but superstition is still very powerful today.
When it comes to superstition, the number 4 has its own 'history and is intensely disliked. Why, because the word ‘four’, when spoken in Chinese, is sounds the same as the Chinese word for ‘death’. This understandably makes it a very unpopular number for any supersitious person.
Thus the Beijing traffic authorities have decided to abolish the number 4 from all new registration plates. This simply act spares the 1,000 new cars that join Beijing’s roads every day from the chance of having to bear the unlucky omen, something that is sure to please.
The decision to drop the number 4 from number plates dies not entirely rest with superstition though. No, there is logic behind the 'madness' as because China uses number plates to reduce compensation, the number of people deciding not to have the number 4 on their plate means that it is skewing the traffic levels on certain days.
On the other hand, the number 8, means good fortune in China, so it’s very popular on number plates. That of course also skews the congestion figures, thus onthe days when car registration plates ending in the number 8 are banned from being driven, the roads are comparatively much quieter.
