Drivers are being warned to be on the aleert after a surge in car number plate thefts in Wokingham.
At the moment police are baffled as to what the plates are being used for, however, they some are being used in petrol thefts, avoiding the congestion charge or in other low level crimes.
Thieves it seems also often take only one plate from a car, which is again odd. Detective Inspector Rodger Cartwright, from Wokingham police, said: “Number plate theft nationally is a problem and yhere have been similar problems in Surrey and the inference is that it’s kids but I have no definite evidence.”
He warned parents to be vigilant if they find number plates as trophies in their child’s room or on their skateboard, these it seems often being used in ‘grinding’ on skateboards.
He pointed out that stealing number plates is a crime and if an offender is slightly older they can end up with a conviction which can affect future employment.
PCSO Susie Carr, who polices the Shinfield area in Wokingham, said: “I have a poor old man in my area whose plates have been taken three times in as many months.”
