Fitting of irreversible number plate screws across south-west Sydney
Police in Australia are urging motorists to take advantage of Operation Tabella, a programme aimed at the fitting of irreversible number plate screws to thousands of car, lorries and other vehicles, all free of charge.
By the 10th August 2009 Over 11,000 cars has been fitted with the irreversible screws as a result of the second stage of the operation.
Operation Tabella is a joint-initiative by NSW Police Force and the NSW Attorney General’s Department and has been highly successful, fitting these screws to 11,674 vehicles.
The programme will continue, the police fitting screws free of charge on an individual basis where possible. Motorists are being urged to contact their local police station to take advantage of the operation.
These irreversible screws can only be removed by a special tool issued to the 14 police Local Area Commands in the South-West Metropolitan region of Australia.
Number plate theft represents 12% of all items stolen from motor vehicles in 2007/2008 and as they are used in a variety of crimes ranging from service station “drive-offs”, road toll fraud and by armed robbers, not to mention street racers, if the number of number plate thefts can be reduced then all the better.
