15/11/09 The powers that be in Switzerland are concerned that Google's 'Street Level' videos are affecting the privacy of its citizens and have taken Google to court. They say that not enough care is taken by Google when using footage in its Street View service (which provides users with a 360-degree view of any "street-level" location), sometimes faces and number plates are clearly visible. Their view is that Street View might make things difficult for local residents, especially people in sensitive locations like hospitals, schools and prisons. Data Protection Commissioner Hanspeter Thuer said, "Numerous faces and vehicle number plates are not made sufficiently unrecognizable". Thuer has also asserted that it is the height of the camera that is used for pictures is also a problem as they allow views over fences and walls, thereby allowing users to see more with Street View than would when walking or driving down the street themselves. Google has stated that Street View is completely legal in Switzerland and the company will "vigorously contest the case". It does not end there however, as, as the court case might take up-to months to commence, there is a possibility that Thuer will seek a tribunal order forcing Google to remove all Swiss pictures till the full ruling is made.
