A town in South Devon has been hit by a series of bizarre number plate thefts that could possibly be linked to a pair of smash and grab raids.
So far plates have been stolen from a dozen cars in various roads in the Salcombe area, at an rate one a day. Police fear there could be more as drivers think their plates have just fallen off or perhaps do not even realise one or both are missing.
One possible link is to a £5,000 raid on a shop in the centre of Salcombe. Here thieves used a hammer to smash their way in through a window before stealing a haul of designer sunglasses.
That raid is almost certainly linked to an almost identical raid on a jewellery shop in Salcombe three days later, when the thieves made off with thousands of pounds worth of rings etc.
A Volvo getaway car in the first raid was spotted, but it had the registration number of a holidaymaker's car. The number plates were found dumped on the road just a few yards way from the car from which they had been stolen from in the first place!
From then on other number plates began disappearing from various cars around the town. All the cars have all been parked within half a mile of one another in Church Street, Church Road, Allenhayes Road, Ackland Street and the Shadycombe car park.
There were four incidents over last weekend alone.
