17/8/09 Number Plate Theft in Devon Causes the Local Police to React The increasing number of number plate thefts in Brixham, Devon has prompted police to invest in one thousand safety screws which they are offering free to motorists in the area. Acting sergeant Tracy Sharam has recently handed out 600 of these anti-theft screws at Paignton Green and is urging drivers, especially those in the Brixham area, to pick up the remainder at their local police stations. She said: "We saw a huge number of number plates thefts in Brixham in the early part of June." "People also steal number plates as a way to avoid our auto number plate recognition system, which can tell whether cars have tax, MOT and insurance. "And sometimes youngsters steal them to stick on their walls if say the number plates are a bit novel or they match their initials. "I did a bit of research and decided to take the bull by the horns and buy some screws that you can't undo and offer them free to members of the community in Brixham, Paignton and Torquay." The safety screws were funded by Safer Communities Torbay to the tune of £60. They are simple to use and are available free from the front office of Brixham Police Station in New Road, or the main desks at Paignton and Torquay police stations.
