The leaders of the European Union are set to choose the first President of the European Council soon and the signs are that they will vote for Herbert Van Rompuy, the prime minister of Belgium and it seems a committed believer in European federalism.
Mr Van Rompuy is the architect of his party's manifesto, which among other things calls for the abolition of "national symbols" in favour of a 'EU symbol' This means that licence plates, identity cards, even the imposition of a European anthem may be on the cards.
The gradual loss of control of our licence plates is something that will annoy many (and perhaps cost the UK Government a lot of money - which may make it a non starter of course) and is another way that the EU is seen to be affecting us, much to the dismay of the anti EU lobby.
Nothing is as yet set in stone, but it is a worry for those who love our number plates and who run businesses in this area.
