23/10/09 Because of a computer error an American man has received a total of $19,000 (£11,500) of parking fines which were intended for unknown vehicles, all because his personalised number plate reads 'XXXXXXX'. Unlucky Scottie Roberson of Huntsville received the notices from the parking control authorities in Birmingham, Alabama, even though he had only visited the city once five years ago. Roberson had selected e this unusual plate number because of his 'Racer X' nickname (from when he was a custom car builder) and because seven is his lucky number! City officials told Roberson that he had received the fines, (up to ten a day for ten different places), because when a ticket is issued for an unknown number plate, parking officials use seven Xs on their forms. Roberson was reportedly unimpressed, saying "Whenever I call, nobody seems to want to help me. One woman said not to worry about it because they didn't have the manpower to come arrest me." Why this is comforting in one way, it is surely not something that should have been said... Birmingham (USA) traffic engineer Gregory Dawkins comented: "Maybe we need to go with nine Xs, or maybe we just need to leave that part blank altogether." Sure sounds like a good idea to me, and would certainly stop it happening all over again.
